When opening sequence files in this fashion, the Open File Dialog does not check to make sure the filename given exists, or if the user has security privilages to access the file.
If (the file does not exist) OR (the user does not have permissions to read the file) then
The user gets this access violation \"ACCESS VIOLATION AT ADDRESS 0050635D IN MODULE MEGA4.EXE. READ OF ADDRESS 00000000\"

I have added fmFileMustExist to the open dialog so that you MUST specify a valid file name which fixes the first problem, then I also changed the file mode to only require read only permissions for the sequence file it opens, rather than read write so you can now read a file directly off a CD. |

Hello Smriti,
In your last email, you mentioned something about a CD, are you opening the trace file from a CD? If you are opening the trace file from a CD, please try copying the trace file to your desktop and then opening it.
It appears that MEGA requires permissions to read and write trace files when they are activated, this will be corrected to only require read access in MEGA5.
MEGA comes with several example files, one of which is a trace file called ABI01.abi. Can you open the ABI01.abi file located in C:\\Program Files\\MEGA 4\\Examples\\?
Thanks,
Nick

That last sentence makes it sound like he is trying to open the trace file via a CD. I burned a CD with his .abi file, and ABI01.abi from our examples directory. When you try to open these files from a CD, you get a \"File Access Denied\" exception via mad except.

Note: Tried to upload the files .abi and .fas but the bug tracking system won\'t let me, says that I need to specify a file name, its likely broken. |

Hello Smriti,
I was able to open the trace file that you sent me in MEGA 4 without any problems. Attached is the Fasta file that MEGA generated from your trace file, along with the original trace file you sent me.
Please open the trace file that is attached to this email with your copy of MEGA and let me know how it goes. If you can open the trace file, then it was likely a permissions issue on your end. Have you tried opening this file on any other computer with MEGA installed?
Thanks,
Nick |

Dear Nicholas
Thanks for your kind reply re the MEGA4 problem I have encountered
Am assured by the sequencing people it should not be a permissions issue
In case it is something rectifiable your end I am going to send the file and see if you have any luck
Many thanks

Hello Smriti Pathak,
Thanks for contacting us about a bug that you encountered when opening a trace file. This error has several causes listed below.
1. You do not have permission to read/write the .abi file you choose.
2. The name of the file was spelled incorrectly in the Open Dialog
Please check to make sure check that the filename is spelled correctly, and that you have permission to access the file. If the file is owned by another user, it is likely a permissions issue. Please let me know if that fixes your problem. If it does not, a copy of the .abi data file you are attempting to read would be helpful in fixing this bug.
Thanks,
Nick
