0002817: Architecture / OS compatibility
Hi!
I wonder why MEGA 11 is deliveratly incompatible (can't open trees and alignments) produced by same version of mega of different architecture and / or OS. I've several machines, some with ubuntu 64 bits, some with debian 32 and others with windows (64 bits) and it is a shame that I can't open a tree saved with ohter OS. The program checks for the version of saved file and throw an error. I can't find any good reason to make souch a check.
Thank you for your excelent piece of software.
Andrés

Dear Peter,

You can run 32-bit wine on a 64-bit system, according to the makers of WINE. If you just want to use Wine, there is no need to compile it using the instructions here. Just go to the downloads page and click the link for your distribution:
http://www.winehq.org/site/download [^]

On another note, MEGA is meant to be used as a desktop application and not on a cluster. I don’t think you will see much of a speedup by putting it on a cluster.

Hi Andres,

I am writing in response to your question regarding the MEGA software. Thanks for the feedback. MEGA session files are not portable for historical reasons (MEGA was originally written for use on 32-bit Windows systems and the original authors used a binary format for session files). However, you can save your trees and alignments to text-based files that are portable across operating systems and CPU architectures. For trees, you can export them to Newick files and for alignments you can export them to either FASTA or MEGA formatted files.
