I don't think there is a need to fix this. I believe the problem is that the Genious software exported the user's ab1 files in a format that does not follow the specification correctly.

Hello Simon,
I am responding to the bug report you submitted regarding .ab1 files and Mega. I was unable to open the file you uploaded using Mega 5 so I wasn’t able to determine why Mega displayed stretches of whiteout. However, I was able to open the file using Chromas and then save it again using the Save As… command and this saved a copy that could be opened in Mega and displayed correctly.
