Summary0003751: Unable to Export Time Trees
DescriptionWhenever I export the output tree of RTDT and RelTime analyses from Tree Explorer into a tree file, and I attempt to read them in tree-reading software, the trees become ultrametric trees.
Steps To ReproduceI attached the example phylogeny (raxml_clock1.tre), the outgroup file which only consists of the taxon 'out', and the calibration nodes (cal_nodes.txt).

Once I have run the data through Mega (specifically RTDT-RelTime-Branch Lengths), I get the following tree as the output in the Tree Explorer (tree_out.png) which seems great.

However, when I try to export the tree in any format and subsequently read it through FigTree or similar applications, the tree becomes an ultrametric tree and impossible to check for accuracy (newick_export.nwk).

Hello Christle,
I am responding to the bug crash report you submitted to the MEGA website. The crash you are experiencing is actually a failure in an operating system dll that is being called by MEGA. In the bug report, I can see that two different versions of ‘comctl32.dll’ are loaded into memory. This is basically an operating system service that provides dialogs for opening and saving files and when MEGA asks to open a file, the operating system is throwing the error. Information on this error can be found from the link below (although it describes the problem in Windows XP, not Windows Vista, I believe it is one and the same):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884883 [^]

The article provides a link to a possible fix but I don’t know if it will work for you because it is intended for Windows XP. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide a resolution as the problem is with ‘comctl32.dll’ which is not part of MEGA, but is provided by Microsoft. However, we are adding some error handling code to MEGA so that in the future, instead of crashing when it encounters this error, it will remain responsive.

Best regards,

Glen Stecher
